As the most esteemed awards show to honor smaller-scale films, Sunday night’s Independent Spirit Awards 2024 offered last-minute boosts to a few under-the-radar Oscar hopefuls.
Past Lives captured a victory for best feature and a win for Celine Song’s directing, while American Fiction’s Jeffrey Wright won in the now gender-neutral lead-performance category. (His category was presented by Wright’s fellow Oscar nominee Colman Domingo.) Meanwhile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued her impressive awards run with yet another best-supporting-performance win for The Holdovers. Her costar Dominic Sessa earned best breakthrough performance as well.
The TV side of the ceremony honored shows that previously dominated awards such as the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and the SAG Awards—including Beef, which won best new scripted series as well as lead performance for Ali Wong, and The Last of Us, which received supporting and breakthrough honors. There was also some love for the runaway Freevee hit Jury Duty, honored with a best-ensemble-cast award.
Over a busy awards weekend that also included the 2024 SAG Awards ceremony, blockbusters had their moment as well. Oppenheimer took the top prize at Sunday’s Producers Guild Awards, only a day after earning a best-ensemble win at SAG—indicating solid widespread support from these two guilds (the directors branch gave Christopher Nolan a win earlier this month too). Fellow honorees at the PGA ceremony were Emmy and Globe favorites Succession, The Bear, and Beef.
